- [Antarctica Icebergs](https://allist.one/product/antarctica-icebergs/) - "Frozen in Time" I like that the subject here is clearly ice. I also like that it contains both dynamism and stillness. The smaller fragment lodged on the shore in the foreground stayed still enough to make it sharp, but then this contrasts with the motion blur as you move further into the image, before the static sharpness returns on the far away iceberg. The mid-ground rocks are not all that attention grabbing, but when you inspect them closely they have some lovely texture and colour. And I like that the frequency of the water is smoothed by a long exposure and your eye barely rests as it skim reads the scene.
- [Antarctica Gentoo Penguins Colony](https://allist.one/product/antarctica-gentoo-penguins/) - "Interlocking Geometry" This is what I had in mind when I was planning the Antarctica trip. The visual flow takes your eyes on a journey through the frame, and I was pleased with the postures of penguins. I was unconscious of the textures in the sky while I worked, but when you pump up the dehaze on the later images, the clouds add an extra triangle, subtly accentuating the repetition of interlocking geometry.
- [Antarctica Tuxedo of Penguins](https://allist.one/product/antarctica-tuxedo-of-penguins/) - "A Tuxedo of Penguins" While I was waiting in line to go on a zodiac tour of the headland, I got distracted when some charismatic penguins put on a performance for us and I stayed on land to take some of my favourite images of wildlife in the landscape of the whole trip. I think it was worth it for this image. The headland is obscured almost to the point of disappearing, meanwhile the rocks are sharp in their details, and colourful when polarised. The shutter speed was fast enough to capture the penguins in their expressive gestures while slow enough to keep some movement in the snow flurries. I don’t know about you, but I like odd numbers: groups of 3, 5 or 7 humans, or animals is always preferable than even huddles. There are a few collective nouns for penguins: a colony, a raft and a waddle are all good, but here a tuxedo of penguins seems most suitable.
- [Antarctica Long Exposure Whale Bones](https://allist.one/product/antarctica-long-exposure-whale-bones/) - "Off White" Most of the images I took while camping on Antarctica were nothing special. However, this final subject using the last of the light made carting around three tripods worth the effort. like almost everything about this shot. There is flow in the white through the whale vertebrae and the sweep of the darker rock taking your eyes toward the penguins in the mid ground. If I was being too picky, perhaps the mountain ridge could have been had a more interesting shape. Indeed, there was a picturesque jagged section just out of frame to the left. I focus stacked the final picture for sharpness throughout the frame and I chose a mid-ground shot where the penguins were in their most interesting postures. I had to do a little bit of cloning on the snow to remove two boot prints as I had settled on this composition late. But overall, I am happy with this photo.
- [Ushuaia Laguna Esmeralda](https://allist.one/product/ushuaia-laguna-esmeralda/) - "Clawing" Although this image is slightly imbalanced, with too much visual weight pulling your eye to the left portion of the frame, I still like it. Perhaps the gnarled, clawing gesture of the branches in the lower right is enough to even things out and allow your gaze to move through the scene diagonally towards the stormy light on the interestingly shaped peaks. Given how crowded it was on this hike to Laguna Esmeralda, I just count myself lucky that no one was wondering along the beach and I didn’t need to do any cloning.
- [Rùm from Eigg](https://allist.one/product/rum-from-eigg/) - "Rùm: Dark 'n' Stormy" I like shooting in moody conditions, November storms on Eigg almost defeated me. This shoot was the definition of type 2 fun—still now, a month on, I can't quite bring myself to like this image, but it's growing on me. Seriously though, if someone asks me why I huddle under an umbrella waiting for the clouds to pass, this image is a fair response. I used to never like shooting green objects because they attract so much attention, but dark clouds are the perfect counterpoint to all that vibrancy in the lower portion of this frame.
- [Ushuaia Laguna Esmeralda Log](https://allist.one/product/ushuaia-laguna-esmeralda-log/) - "Milky Blue" When I started composing, the sky had been blue, but as I framed up, some dark clouds moved though and created some impressive mood. I shot this as a square and the tranquil feeling of an even framing works. My aim was to for the diagonal of the trunk to balance the diagonal of the mountain ridge in the opposite corner. I thought that this symmetry was improved as direct light fell on the trees on the far shore.

The only arduous task was cloning out hot pixels!

The autumn colours contrast the turquoise water nicely and this is what I focused on in the editing room.

- [Scotts Pines on Loch Maree](https://allist.one/product/scotts-pines-bonsai-loch-assynt-copy/) - "That's My Snow" I spent a good hour sitting on this composition. When I first arrived, the hulking presence of Slioch stood out prominent above the Scots pines on the island. However, while I was setting up the shot, the sun gathered momentum and the heated snow evaporated and formed a mist that obscured the mountaintop. I cursed my luck. Before too long though, I got a window where I was able to make some long exposures. I like the light in this image. A cloud off to stage left diffused the mid-morning sun softening the shadows on the foreground. At the same time the light lifts the highlights and makes the greens of the pines pop. I only spent a morning at Loch Maree, but I cannot wait to return and give this place the attention it deserves.
- [The Shore of Loch Tulla](https://allist.one/product/the-shore-of-loch-tulla/) - "Throwing Shade" I've not had much luck photographing Loch Tulla. In the warmer seasons the midges are the worst thing about this area, and when I went there in winter I got sleet. Wet snow makes managing your photography gear hard work. To make things worse, I had forgotten my umbrella. After a futile few minutes trying to take photos while my front element caked up with snow, I called it quits, covered my cameras with a Sainsbury's bag, and hunkered down beneath a nearby tree. The downpour soon passed. Soaked and shivering, I mopped as much water from my lens as possible and made an image of the shadow left in the lee of the birch. I had about two minutes to work before the snow melted, but I am quite pleased with the result.
- [Sahara Dune Shadows](https://allist.one/product/sahara-dune-shadows/) - "The Wall of the Cave" As you might expect, a trip to the Sahara from Marrakech is a canned experience. After a day and a half journey crammed into a minibus with strangers, you arrive having made some friends in late afternoon. We rode camels into the desert and while everyone else was sandboarding, I got a some opportunities to take landscape photos with my tripod. As we stayed in the desert overnight, I also got up a couple of hours before anyone else and took some photos of the clear night sky. However, these "landscape" images didn't come to much: it was hard to find areas of pristine sand to include as a foreground; footprints and quadbike tracks seemed to mar every shot. I took this image as we rode the camel train out of the desert for sunrise and despite my cynicism at "tourist experiences" sunrise it was atmospheric, and I think I captured some of that mood. I would like to come back to the desert for some focused photography time. I am tempted to hire a car myself and drive down from Fez and take day trips from the towns which surround this stretch of sand dunes.
- [Dead Trees on Covehithe](https://allist.one/product/dead-trees-on-covehithe/) - "In Knots" My mothers sider of the family meet in Southwold every summer. We have been doing so since the 60s. Luckily my cousins are a similar age to me, so the tradition was never a chore and we still see each other there in June or July before the schools break up. When I first got into landscape photography, visiting Southwold was exhausting. At that time, I still thought that getting a good photograph meant catching sunrise colour—and sunrise during the solstice on the east coast is unreasonably early. Still, I caught a few good images using this approach. This one from Covehithe is not the sort of photo that I would usually, intimate landscapes not being my forte. Yet given the time of year we visit, conditions that would allow me to take a shot of the wider landscape and include more of the petrified trees on the beach, has not been forthcoming. Hopefully one day, a high tide will coincide with moody fog during our week on the Suffolk coast.

- [MacLeod's Stone Stars](https://allist.one/product/macleods-stone-stars/) - "The Stone and the Plough" Most of my time on the Isle of Harris was overcast. I didn't mind too much as I wanted moody pictures from Scotland, but when the skies cleared on one of the nights, I took the opportunity to shoot the stars. Geomagnetic activity had been strong earlier in the week and I was hoping to catch some aurora, but none was visible to the naked eye. However, when I got the shot back on a computer screen, a little green is visible on the horizon! This image was shot with a Kase star glow filter to make the constellations pop.
- [Isle of Harris Geology](https://allist.one/product/isle-of-harris-geology/) - "Time and Pressure" On my way up to Lewis and Harris, I broke my journey in Glencoe. My host for the night told me that Harris was like another planet. Hardly any trees and a stark, exposed landscape. She was not wrong. That is one of the reasons that photographers flock here from all over the UK. Despite that, I hardly saw another photographer the whole time I was on Harris. Long white sand beaches stretched for miles with just me and no other soul. In the end, though, I am less pleased with my white sand shots than I am with the ones containing rocks. The geology is astonishing on Harris and Lewis, and you don’t have to search very far to find the perfect foreground to compliment the pleasingly-shaped mountains and hills. I found this striated rock at sunset and had to return for morning to shoot it again.

- [Suilven from Cam Loch](https://allist.one/product/suilven-from-cam-loch/) - "Distorted Echo" The first image of any trip is always the most difficult. To warm up, I tend to start my adventures by falling back on a honeypot location, or a shot that I have taken before. This composition is one that I had taken the year on a gloomy day at sunset. As you can see from this follow up attempt, the location is much more suited to sunrise. The only thing that could have improved these conditions, would be mist on the water. Or am I being too demanding? Truth be told, this composition had worked better last year when the water was lower and the twin peaks of Suilven could be seen more clearly. In that version, the curves of this river outlet and the shoreline echoed a stretched silhouette of Suilven at a ninety degree angle. This year, that symmetry is less apparent. No doubt this is one I will return to again in the future.
- [Suilven and Canisp from Cam Loch](https://allist.one/product/suilven-and-canisp-from-cam-loch/) - "The Stillness and the Storm" The stillness I feel when I look at this picture belies the reality. Sunrise shoots are always a mad dash to get images while the light lasts. Add into the mix a flying a drone and the peace that you might expect feel on a still autumn morning gets droned out by the stream of thoughts and the whir of propellers. In truth though, I did find some peace during this morning's shoot. And as I drove away from Cam Loch, the sound of roaring red deer and lapping water drowned out the usual chatter of my mind. This first day of my autumn Highlands adventure was the best for weather—sunny with occasional showers rolling through. The rain that came throughout the day, was prescient, however, of the winds and heavy rain of Storm Babet that would roll in close behind.
- [Lone Tree on Coigach](https://allist.one/product/lone-tree-on-coigach/) - "Alone by the Shore" A return a year on to this tree on Loch Bad a' Gaill. Last time I visited, the tree had lost all but one of its leaves. Autumn was quite late this year (2023) and the leaves had only just started changing colour. The rain coming through made managing my gear challenging, but as the squall began to clear, Stac Pollaidh, Cul Beag and Sgorr Tuath started to emerge and I took the shot. This image is quite technically challenging. I would have liked to smooth the water more, but any stir of wind and the leaves shook and looked messy. I would have also liked to bring down the highlights in the sky in some shots, but because the tree spanned the whole composition, a graduated neutral density filter makes the shadows too messy. The only option left is to drag the shutter for as long as you dare during moments with less wind. As it was, this frame came out very well.
- [Rainbows on Coigach](https://allist.one/product/rainbows-on-coigach/) - "Good Things Come" I love the west shore of Loch Bad a' Gaill. you could spend months only here and by focusing on different compositions you could have an interesting portfolio. Yet I keep being drawn back to the same compositions. I like shooting in Autumn. Even in the middle of the day, the light can be beautiful. Especially in the mountains. I spent a few hours framing this composition during the day, and I like the warm to cool contrast in those shots. However, sometimes you need a little bit of luck with conditions to create something truly remarkable. Walking home to the car around sunset, I wasn't sure that they light was going to work, but when it did, I was lucky to have a composition preplanned. I didn't have time to do anything. I left my video camera in the bag and set up on the marks my tripod had made earlier that day in the sand. Earlier I had been shooting with my 24-70, but when I set up, I found I had a 20mm lens on my camera. However, this extra space in the frame worked, and some of the elements I had manoeuvred out in the earlier composition work to great effect here. The stones act as anchor points stopping the eye from exiting the scene at the base of the image and the curve of the slither of sand in the foreground is echoes in the the lines in the headland, the patterns of the clouds and the rainbow above Stac Pollaidh. The edge Sgorr Tuath in the top right of the frame is softened by the rain rolling in, and become less of a distraction in this wider composition.
- [Three Sisters of Glencoe](https://allist.one/product/rainbows-on-coigach-copy/) - "Like a Bee to..." The first time I was in Glencoe, I didn't get it. But with the conditions I had while I circumnavigated Storm Babet on the way home from Assynt last year, I started to understand the landscape. The rain partially obscured the mountains and farther peaks faded to nothingness in the distance. Of all the images I took during my autumn 2023 Highlands trip, this is the most generic. I usually use a honey pot location to open a trip and get my eye in. But after nine days away from home, I was all out of decision-making juice and the three sisters of Glencoe is spectacular, if not that original.
- [Achnahaird Beach Sunrise](https://allist.one/product/achnahaird-beach-sunrise/) - "Scratch That" I spent a while editing this image. Lack of sleep had led me to be careless, and I had left some footprints in the midground which I had little hesitation in cloning out. The tracks made by the marram grass were not a strong enough feature to act as a foreground hook, but luckily the green of the grass itself anchors the eye. That being said, there is something imbalanced about this image. Perhaps there is a little too much midground; I had hoped that the reflective sand would really pick up a sky and catch fire, but it was fairly underwhelming in the end. Perhaps I should have focused less on the grass and walked out onto the wet sand. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and sometimes it is hard to approach a composition in the dark and to get it right first time—even with modern live previews! This was taken at the low point of my autumn 2023 trip to the northwest highlands. I'd just dropped my camera in the sand and scratched my 24-70 lens, so I wasn't at all sure while I was shooting that this photo would come out. I had to fight the temptation to pack up my car, and go home right then and there. In the end of scratched Lens was repairable. An expensive mistake, but one that I’ll learn from. I've always treated my gear in a rough manner. I think of photography equipment as tools, and I’ve needed to put them in harms way sometimes to get photos. But with shooting behind the scenes video, there’s an extra dimension and I need to take a little bit more care.
- [St Cwyfan's Astrophotography](https://allist.one/product/st-cwyfans-astrophotography/) - "Scratching that Itch" I've had this shot in mind for over two years, and considering how bad the weather has been this summer for astrophotography, this was a satisfying way to kick off a productive trip to North Wales. The tide was higher than I was expecting, so the composition wasn't quite what I had in mind, but I think the inverted question mark of the rocks works with the MW a few degrees off vertical. The mountains on the Llyn Peninsula and meteor streak balance the image nicely.
- [St Cwyfan's Church Pink Sunset](https://allist.one/product/st-cwyfan-pink-sunset/) - "Pastel Dream" I arrived in time for sunset intending to shoot astrophotos at high tide later in the evening. While I like the shots of the milky way behind the church, this image is my favourite from the shoot. Green can sometimes dominate a composition, but here the seaweed on the driftwood compliments the pastels nicely.
- [Loch Assynt Rainbows](https://allist.one/product/loch-assynt-rainbows/) - "The Eye in the Storm" No amount heavy editing in Photoshop can make up for the excitement of a burst atmospherics. I'd been hanging around the edge of the loch since lunchtime, lining up compositions for when the light would hit, and while framing up something completely different, I got lucky, and a rainbow appeared off to the left. I didn’t have time to recompose for the rainbow, but I think the composition works well enough. In honesty, I’m not sure it really matters here: the lone tree subject and the rainbow do all the work for me. Even when editing, I only really need to think about technical things: focus stacking and colour temperature adjustments are all you need with conditions like this. I like that the window of light around the subject forms the almond shape of an eye and that the rocks complete Picasso-like trail of facial features in the foreground. In addition to strong leading lines, I often also look for human shapes, faces and gestures in the landscape.

I also like that the cloud in the top right forms the smudged shape of the mainland UK.

- [Loch Assynt Trees](https://allist.one/product/loch-assynt-trees/) - "Pink as I Turn on the Light" Loch Assynt was on my inspiration board for my first trip to Coigach and Assynt, but it was a stretch goal and I hadn't really researched it. Driving in in the dark, I had Ardvreck Castle vaguely in mind, but as I drove along the road north of the loch, I saw these trees illuminated by a full moon. I'm glad I stopped here as I got a monster of sunrise and—despite the gale force winds forecasts—I got some of the best opportunities for long exposure photography of my trip. Arriving in the dark, completely unfamiliar with a landscape is always a challenge: you have to navigate dodgy, often boggy, terrain and work out a composition. I usually use my camera handheld at a really high ISO and take lots of shots until I have found something that works. I was lucky to come away with a couple of compositions that I was really happy with—and both look completely different!
- [Autumn Colours in Inverpolly](https://allist.one/product/autumn-colours-in-inverpolly/) - "Our Fathers' Shoulders" The first visit to a new photo location is a funny thing. I use the first encounter with a landscape to learn the lay of the land and find inspiration for future exploration. Before a trip, I'll plan some key locations—usually inspired by other photographers or hikers I follow on social media—then I connect those dots by road. As I'm driving, I start to see things of interest to explore on foot. Sometimes I have time to explore there and then; sometimes I make a note for a later date. This image was taken right at the end of my first encounter with the landscape of Coigach and Assynt—as I began to explore beyond the dictates of the road atlas. The mountain behind the loan tree is Stac Pollaidh. I like the sense of youthful rebellion standing tall against the elements and the trunk of an ancestor tree in the foreground. When I arrived in the northwest Highlands, I had just started reading Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake, and I could almost feel the subterranean relationships between the trees as I worked the scene. I'd like to return to this birch grove a couple of weeks earlier and catch the peak autumn leaves, but equally, I am very happy with the warmth of the ferns in the understory contrasting with the silvery bleak sky. Technically, this was an awkward shot to get. I had to shield the camera from rain buffeting in from all directions, and there was a fern very close in the foreground that was moving. I shot at f18 and iso1000 to get the depth of field and shutter speed needed. As such, while I took a few versions of this composition, this was the only one I executed well. I shot with a 4:5 crop in mind, but the height of that lovely cloud requires a 3:4 crop to give it the space it needs.

- [Ayrmer Cove Branch](https://allist.one/product/aymer-cover-branch/) - "Rock, Stick, Cotton" I'd spend the night shooting astrophotography in Ayrmer cover, but despite the late bedtime, I couldn't resist returning early for sunrise. The tide was the perfect height, and the clouds looked like they had the potential to ignite. The colours were spectacular, and I spent over an hour with this scene as the clouds behind turned blue to red through purple, pink and orange. Although the colours were more dramatic later, I prefer the subtlety of this, one of my first frames of the morning, taken towards the end of blue hour. About the stick. It may or may not have been moved into a more pleasing gesture; I couldn't possibly comment. What I will say is that I don't know whether I consider this a landscape image, or a still life.
- [Big Tree Grove, Bristol](https://allist.one/product/big-tree-bristol/) - "Cathedral of Trees" In Bristol we are lucky to have so many landscape photography destinations within half an hour or an hour's drive of us. During the pandemic, I started exploring the local area even more and some of the woodlands within and around the city is amazing. This was my is one of my favourite finds. These sequoias might not be as large as some of their Californian cousins, but they are still amazing.
- [Sunset Ridges at Kilve](https://allist.one/product/sunset-ridges-at-kilve/) - "Fishing for Horus's Eye" Finding recognisable shapes in the landscape is always pleasing. I don't force things while I am shooting, but back at the computer editing, an echo Eye of Horus symbol became apparent to me: the setting sun becomes the pupil with pleasing shapes in the clouds providing an almond eye shape, while the Jurassic pavements that lead diagonally into the frame from the left are similar to the cheek and eye socket elements in the ancient Egyptian symbol.

No sunrise colours or fog conditions have since lived up to the excitement of seeing this comet with the naked eye for the first time. In hindsight, I could have gone out hunting more, but I am so happy that I snapped this infrequent visitor over Burnham-on-Sea Low Lighthouse. Oddly for someone who doesn't love light pollution, one of my favourite thing about this image is the glow on the horizon—probably from Barry and Penarth.

My initial plan was to take a two-minute exposure and smooth out the waves. But after making this image, I started shooting 6-second frames and back on the computer—and in print—I like the shorter exposures better. I've learned to never have a fixed idea of how to shoot a scene until you see how the conditions and composition are developing in the field—with landscape photography, I've learned to embrace the unexpected. However, when the unexpected is water leaking in through a hole in your waders, it is less than welcome. Top tip: don’t wear work clothes under waders when sneaking in a shoot on the way to a meeting, and if you do, always check for holes beforehand. In hindsight, maybe my preference for the dramatic shorter exposures of this boating pond has something to do with my early morning soaking... Or maybe the moody clouds and frothing water just lent themselves better to this approach.
- [Exmoor Sunset from Kilve](https://allist.one/product/exmoor-sunset-from-kilve/) - "Stuck in Traffic" There is nothing worse than cramming in a shoot when time is tight. Actually, there is. I misread the train timetable and thought I had an hour longer. The phone call from my wife asking where I was only added to the jeopardy I already felt standing on a rock being cut off by a rapidly incoming tide. Anyway, I did what any sane photographer would do: I hung up the phone, took a few breaths and made this frame. Then I waded to safety with my tripod above my head. When she saw this image printed the other day, she loved it. Not sure she would feel the same if she knew the full story.

The light is often harsher and harder to shoot in. The only exception is Kilve. When the evenings open out, I can afford a trip here after work when I am staying down in Taunton. I'm starting to get to know the tides on this stretch of beach quite well. Local knowledge gives you an edge, especially with long tidal ranges such as those we get on the Bristol Channel—knowing that you have time to stay to catch the last of the colour without the risk of getting cut off by the tide allows one to relax and focus on composing a pleasing image.

At Burnham on Sea, this is particularly apparent. The tide comes in surprisingly fast and you can easily be caught unawares. There are many pleasing subjects along the coast here, but these abandoned fishing boats are among my favorites. I took a little artistic license here and disappeared an already faint horizon. This focuses the attention even more on these charismatic and rapidly disintegrating subjects.
- [Sunset at the Underfall Yard, Bristol](https://allist.one/product/sunset-at-the-underfall-yard-bristol/) - "Bristol Red" A poignant image for me given the recent vandalism of the Underfall Yard. I lived on Bristol Harbour for a year and I enjoyed this iconic landmark most days on a run or an evening stroll. Whenever I take shots this saturated, I’m never sure what to do with them. I was tempted to tone down the colours; you probably needed to witness this mid-March sunset to believe I haven’t overbaked it! Everyone passing stopped to get out their phones and filmed or snapped images. There had been a small boat positioned on the inside of the pontoon the previous evening and I was disappointed to find it gone, but on reflection, it was for the best; something complex in the foreground might have been distracting; and besides, I like that the "Bristol Blue" boat provides a linguistic and tonal contrast to the overwhelming red of the sunset.
- [Rogie Falls, Inverness](https://allist.one/product/rogie-falls-inverness/) - "Quicksilver" Sometimes it's nice not to have a plan. I was making my way down from the northwest highlands and decided to take a morning walk and explore some of the waterfalls I'd spied from the car on my drive up. I really like the tonality of this image. The warmth on the right of the frame draws your eyes through the shot where you see the tree standing alone in the mist. The moody silver sunrise and textured clouds complement this misty scene.
- [Lone Tree at Drove Road](https://allist.one/product/lone-tree-at-drove-road/) - "Clearing" I like a good minimalist shot, but not too minimal. When I first approached this tree, the mist made the scene a bit stark—there was no context and the tree looked like an ink blot on a pure white page. No matter where I placed the tree in the frame, I couldn’t make it work. But as the mist began to thin, the brow of the hill and the line of trees in the background became visible, and with these orienting features, it was much easier to create a shot that I am happy with. I usually prefer the stability of a tripod, but the changing conditions meant I needed to be quick on my feet. Moreover, with all the white in the frame, the shutter speed was high enough that it would have been hard to produce camera shake!
- [Brighton West Peir Sunrise](https://allist.one/product/brighton-west-peir-sunrise/) - "Falling Hourglass" Seascapes are ever-changing and unpredictable. I usually prefer not to plan too much, but this time I couldn't help it. I scouted the location the night before and I hoped the tide would be just right for the waves to be crashing around the columns during my morning shoot. Luckily, things worked out. The waves were rough enough to add white water and texture, and the clouds formed a beautiful backdrop as the sun rose in the clear sky. When shooting on the coast, I take many frames to capture different shapes and perspectives and I found this composition to be the most pleasing. I like how the shoreline echoes the shape of the clouds, creating an almost hourglass-like formation. Normally, I don't use my 14-24 lens for anything other than astrophotography. But this shoot reminded me of the potential for ultrawide photography.

- [Comet Neowise at Southwold](https://allist.one/product/comet-neowise-at-southwold/) - "Beacons" Comet Neowise over the huts and lighthouse at Southwold. By this point in the summer of 2020, Neowise was barely visible to the naked eye, but the camera picked it up well and I got one of my favourite shots of the comet. As a family, we visit Southwold every year. The place holds some magical memories for me, so it was nice to bring some of that magic back as an adult with this composition including some of the iconic landmarks of this Suffolk resort.
- [Misty Sunrise on the Levels](https://allist.one/product/misty-sunrise-on-the-levels/) - "The Flock" This image is poignant as it reminds me of the lifting of the first lockdown in May 2020. This was taken on one of my first walks further afield from my house after that strange spring. I rarely shoot without a tripod, but this scene changed so rapidly that I was forced to take photos handheld and bump up the ISO. Looking back, it is interesting to see that most of my landscape images back then are in the 70-400 range. Nowadays, I'm almost always between 24 and 40mm. It is funny how the subjects and way you shoot evolves over time without you even noticing.
- [Beacons Reservoir Stars, Merthyr Tydfil](https://allist.one/product/beacons-reservoir-stars-merthyr-tydfil/) - "Beyond this Island" My first attempt and making a well-composed, "graphical" astrophotography image. I like the clean lines and how the Milky Way mirrors the sweep of the shore in the foreground. The glow from Merthyr Tydfil leads your eye past the island through the image. I went for a blue tone in the image. Partly, this was a practical choice: the light pollution meant I couldn't bring any purples and reds out of the Milky Way Core. But the blue colour balance was also a narrative device: it was minus four degrees centigrade while I took this; by the end of the shoot, dew from the bog had frosted all my gear, and my shoelaces were frozen solid; blue tones get across the experience of being there in the cold. Furthermore, although we only experience the night as blue during a full moon or shortly after sunset or before sunrise, in our psyches, the night is the inky blue of the unknown.
- [Glastonbury Tor Behind Wells Catehderal](https://allist.one/product/glastonbury-tor-behind-wells-catehderal/) - "The Church and the Tower" I love it when a plan comes together. I’d been scouting this location for well over a year and I finally found the landowner and got permission to take a photo from this spot. I returned a few times during the following 6 months to see how the scene evolved and what the best conditions are to get mist around the Tor—but not so much as to obscure my view. I would have liked to see this image with a little more autumn colour, but things got busy for me in October and November and I'll return this year. The edit on this was really challenging. I wanted to draw more attention to the mist-covered Tor in the background, but dehaze and extreme contrast adjustments were off the table because I needed to preserve the softness of the pastel palette.
- [Bluebells in Bristol](https://allist.one/product/bluebells-in-bristol/) - "A Week from Peak Blue" Another gem within touching distance of Bristol. There was still a week until the bluebells got to their best, but I was glad to photograph them in these conditions. At first, when I arrived in the woods near Wrington, I tried to avoid including any of the paths. Perhaps it was the jets taking off from Bristol airport a short distance away—interrupting the nature sounds of the forest—but after exploring this small strip of land for 20 minutes, I decided against this approach; the best thing, I decided, was to embrace man's footprint on the landscape. After the clear path leading you through the scene, and the fresh lime green of the spring leaves in the centre of the frame, my favourite thing about this photograph is the green moss and ivy growing up the beech trees.
- [Burrow Mump Milky Way](https://allist.one/product/burrow-mump-milky-way/) - "Michael and the Milky Way" I have photographed St Michaels church many times, but I have never thought of this church as a good Milky Way location - at least not from on top of the hill. But one clear night in October, I thought I would try my luck and see. Late Milky Way season shots never have the same colour without the galactic core visible, but the dust clouds still adds an element of interest to the image.

Here Jupiter burns brighter than any of the other stars and makes the image for me.
- [Stormy Sunrise at Glastonbury Tor](https://allist.one/product/glastonbury-stormy-sunrise/) - "Storm Fire on the Levels" There are a few weeks of the summer when, from one of my favourite vantage points, the sun rises directly behind the Tor. Three thirty alarm calls don't thrill me, but and if the conditions are right, you can get some truly spectacular images. As a consequence I tend to be tired for much of the solstice period! This was one of those mornings when you wake up and look out of the window and you wonder if you should go back to bed. All the way up until the sun peaked from behind the clouds it looked like it might be a foggy grey day. When the clouds started catching fire, I was jumping with excitement. I worked for ten minutes moving around and working the scene for to get the perfect alignment. Of the three hundred images I took that morning, this is my favourite. Moody skies and deep shadows frame pools of light collecting on the cloud inversion in the valley. The flock of birds adds balance and tops off the composition.

The Somerset Levels, where I shot these images, would have been inaccessible bog as the sweet track was still a few centuries from construction.
- [Sunrise and Moonset at Burrow Mump](https://allist.one/product/sunrise-and-moonset-at-burrow-mump/) - "Pink Fish" Burrow Mump lit up at sunrise with 2020's Sturgeon Moon setting behind it. This one was months in the making. Cloudy skies have obscured the full moon from this angle for two windows before I got this shot. On the drive (and the night before,) I was unsure whether this image would come together. The sunrise was spectacular, but all the way there the moon was obscured by cloud. I almost pulled over to shoot into the sun twice on the approach to Burrow Mump. I'm so glad I stuck with the plan. As always, there is room for improvement. Next time I would like not to have run 200 meters across a field just before composing, so that I could enjoy the moment more. My favourite feature of this image is the photographer on the hill. You probably can't see at Instagram res, but in this frame he is shooting back towards me. (Not sure if he can see me. I'm at 600mm a mile or so away...)

The Somerset Levels, where I shot this, would have been inaccessible bog as the sweet track was still a few centuries from construction. This image was taken with a 30 year old lens and I thought it was unsalvageable due to lens flare, but in March 2021 - with skills that I gathered in the year since I took the image - I reedited and I think this is the best of the bunch. All images are printed to a high specification. Anything smaller than A3 (in this case 10x12" and smaller) is rendered on Canon Semi Gloss Photo Paper for anything bigger than A3, I use Hahnemühle FineArt German Etching Paper.
- [Pink Moon at Burrow Mump](https://allist.one/product/pink-moon-at-burrow-mump/) - "Burrowbridge Supermoon" This was the first 2021 supermoon and it didn't disappoint. In this image the moon is 99.9% full. Half an hour earlier, it had been 100%. A few seconds before it was due to drop behind the ruined church of St Michael in Burrowbridge, Somerset, the moon got lost in the haze on the horizon. A friend of mine said that I shouldn't have included the vehicles in the foreground of this image, but I like the context that they give to the shot. They give some feeling to the flat Somerset Levels that surrounds the iconic islands that home Glastonbury Tor and Burrow Mump. It would have been nice for a bit more of the mist which is lapping the left side of the hill to build, but there is always next full moon!
- [Cows and Mist at Glastonbury Tor](https://allist.one/product/cows-and-mist-at-glastonbury-tor/) - "Scratching an Itch" The ancient ancestors of domesticated cattle - the aurochs - erected standing stones throughout the known world as a convenient way to scratch an itch. Modern cows retain this knowledge and wonder why humans are so obsessed with these megaliths.
- [Deer and Mist at Glastonbury Tor](https://allist.one/product/deer-and-mist-at-glastonbury-tor/) - "Huh?!" I often see a group of roe deer at the bottom of this field on the Mendips. This day, I arrived a little late: I was in such a rush, I didn't take off my work shoes and put on my boots. I stuck to the perimeter of the field because I didn't want to get soaking feet before a long day at work and in the end, I'm glad I did. I remained fairly unintimidating and the I didn't scare the deer away.
- [Misty Sunrise at Glastonbury Tor](https://allist.one/product/misty-sunrise-at-glastonbury-tor/) - "Convection Fog" I recently made a distinction in my photography planning. I used to plan shoots only. Typically a plan would involve a scouting trip and some work on PhotoPills before I waited for the right conditions to get my shot. However, I was starting to get quite a lot of folders with locations on Glastonbury Tor and came up with a new category: stomping grounds. Stomping grounds are areas where I have done multiple shoots and explored extensively. Rather than one-off shoots, stomping grounds are places of ongoing study. Now the various shoots from the fields and hills with views onto Glastonbury Tor are neatly nested inside my Glastonbury stomping ground parent folder and my 'shots' folder looks much less messy!
- [Wells Cathederal and the Tor](https://allist.one/product/wells-cathederal-and-the-tor/) - "Between Me and the Moon" I love it when a plan comes together. I've been scouting this location for well over a year and I finally found the landowner and got permission to take a photo from there. Can't wait to return in the autumn for the fall colours!
- [Burrow Mump Floods](https://allist.one/product/burrow-mump-floods/) - "Ice and Stars" I haven't seen the levels this flooded since 2013/14. Rarer still is a cold spell following while the water is so high. I'd scouted this location the week before, and for the night shoot I had to don waders after my boots got flooded on the recce! I wasn't all that cold, but the water had risen since my first visit and it was a job managing my camera gear with nowhere to perch my bag—and batteries kept dying. It must have been several degrees below zero; by the time I returned to the car, my path out had frozen back over. Worth the effort though. Printed out, the ice patterns in the foreground look amazing close-up!
- [Snow Trees at Ashton Court](https://allist.one/product/snow-trees-at-ashton-court/) - "Simplified" Snow is magical. Growing up in the mild South West, I thought it was the rarity of snow and ice that made them appealing. Yet after living in Russia for the best part of three years, I still haven't got my fill of cold, crystalline conditions. Of course, it's impossible to single out one reason for snow's mystique—personal and cultural associations as well as romantic symbolism all mix in my feelings towards it. However, since I took up landscape photography, my favourite thing about snow is that it simplifies a scene. Anyone who's lived in Bristol will have walked past this pond in Aston court. I had never seen a photo opportunity here; there is a path that runs diagonally through the scene and the pond shore is muddy from thousands of dogs who love to bound into it. A dusting of snow hid these 'blemishes' and transformed the mundane into something else.
- [Snow on the Quantocks](https://allist.one/product/snow-on-the-quantocks/) - "Fleeting Light" My favourite light is indirect, and I prefer mist or blue-hour photography over shooting in conditions that strongly shape the light. I'm generally methodical in my approach to photography, but sometimes everything comes together and you have to move fast—and I do enjoy the thrill of the chase. This was one of those occasions. After working with moody conditions during an early shoot in the woods, I was sitting in the car with a friend discussing where we should go next. During the five minutes we talked, the sun started burning through the mist. Eventually, the orange glow was impossible to ignore and further discussion became moot. We shouldered our bags and headed back into the woods. I'm glad we did because this light was transient. I only had time to find a composition and take two frames before the mist cleared and the moment was gone.
- [Quantock Birch Grove](https://allist.one/product/quantock-birch-grove/) - "Uprooted" One of those evenings where you don't think the conditions are anything special. But then a fog blew in off the sea and brought some magic to this birch grove. Despite their proximity, I haven't explored the Quantocks with a camera enough. My feeling is that these hills lend themselves to intimate scenes rather than sweeping vistas, but I am going to continue to explore in the coming years, and I hope that I am wrong.
- [Dead Woman's Ditch, Quantocks](https://allist.one/product/dead-womans-ditch-quantocks/) - "Bewitched" I love revisiting places in different conditions. Although I thought this image would be nice when I first set up, I could have done with a bit more snow to simplify the scene, but I was happy enough. Then the mist rolled in and transformed the scene and the slightly scrubby ground mattered less. When I first started focusing on landscape photography in 2019, I was living between London and Taunton and I was surprised by how little inspiration from the Quantocks I could find online. Now that I am more familiar with the landscape—and landscape photography in general—I realise that I was looking for the wrong thing. These hills—nestled between the Somerset towns of Bridgwater, Minehead and Taunton—lend themselves much more to close study than grand vistas. This image of Dead Woman's Ditch in Over Stowey illustrates this point.
- [Elk Island, Moscow](https://allist.one/product/between-the-antlers/) - "Between His Antlers" When I first took up photography, I was more into wildlife photography than landscapes. I was living in Moscow at the time and I used to hike into the Parks around the city. This was taken in Losiny Ostrov (Elk Island,) north of MKAD, but south of Mytishchi. It was a handheld image with a standard lens and just goes to show that upi 'd need an expensive telephoto to do wildlife. In fact, some of my favourite wildlife images include a lot of the environment. If you look closely between the stags antlers you will see how serendipitous this image is!
- [Beacons Reservoir Snow, Merthyr Tydfil](https://allist.one/product/beacons-reservoir-snow-merthyr-tydfil/) - "In the Valley" My style of photography lends itself more to low country than higher ground; I prefer to make an image of a mountain from one. I've known this for a while, but I still occasionally hike up hills. During the cold spell towards the end of December (2022,) we were blessed with a generous helping of snow. I mainly focused on local subjects on the Quantocks, but the snow quickly receded in Somerset and with a weekend at a loose end, I decided to go up Pen y Fan for sunrise. It was a fun hike and the first time I have trodden through deep snow since I left Moscow in 2017. Soon on leaving the car park, visibility dropped to 10 metres. I decided to complete my walk—there is always a chance you might get lucky. However, at the summit, there wasn't a chance of the sun poking through any time soon. It was minus five-degree temperatures and wind speeds of 30kmph and unwilling to hang around, I packed up and returned to the valley and one of my favourite locations in the Brecon Beacons: Beacons Reservoir. I'm not sure if this photo makes it clear that the subject trees are on an island. But though I walked all the way around the shore to find a vantage point that made this fact clearer, I prefer the shape of the snow-covered ice more in this composition. This is the type of image I enjoy making most nowadays: a simple, graphical composition. Snow and mist are the dream ticket for this type of image. Although the sleet made keeping the lens clean a challenge!
- [1-2-1 Glastonbury Tor Workshops](https://allist.one/product/1-2-1-glastonbury-tor-workshops/) - "Tor Tour" I am quite familiar with various Glastonbury Tor compositions—in fact, I've shot the landmark from almost every direction and have explored the various footpaths around the Tor. This workshop is an opportunity for us to explore these locations together and review the photos that you get. Included in this workshop: - 5 hours exploring various vantage points on the Tor - 2 hours processing tuition (online) Workshops are friendly and relaxed and are aimed at photographers of all levels. This workshop is best done in the morning when you are most likely to get some convection fog on the levels. Although you might want to get a shot from a certain location, there's no guarantee of good lighting conditions on the day, so for our first location at sunrise, it is best to be a bit flexible and then we can explore some other locations as the morning progresses. What we will cover on location: - Camera settings - Compositional tips - Location planning (and how to pivot when the conditions and light change!) - Working with filters What we cover online: - Choosing images to edit - Post-processing in Lightroom and Photoshop Not included: - Health or accident insurance - Camera equipment insurance - Accommodation You'll need: - A camera - Tripod - Waterproof clothing and walking boots - A smartphone Once you have submitted the order, I will be in contact to arrange dates. While the workshop is available all year round, the summer can be hard on you if you are not an early (early) riser. I can open this up to groups (maximum of three.) For group sessions, the on-location part of the day is done as a group, while the online feedback and editing tuition is individual. This ensures that each attendee gets enough out of the workshop.
- [Stonehenge Astrophotography](https://allist.one/product/alien-light-at-stonehenge/) - "The Return of the King" I was disappointed at first when photography students from the local college began to light the rocks from inside the circle. After travelling for two hours, I had a short window to photograph the Milky Way in a striking vertical position, and it was a shame to have a wasted trip. But after taking a couple of images and looking at the back of the camera, I realised that this was an opportunity to get quite a surreal and unique shot. I like the light spilling from the centre of the stones with the Milky Way rising behind it. The alien origins of Stonehenge proved? Or the second coming of King Arthur? I'll leave you to decide.

- [Ayrmer Cove Milky Way](https://allist.one/product/ayrmer-cove-milky-way/) - "Two Rocks" Usually I like to plan milk way images in advance. Composing in the dark can be a real challenge. This image taken at Ayrmer Cove was an exception. The two white rocks stood out clearly as I stumbled around, exploring rock pools in the murk. I took a few images at high ISO to perfect my composition and then took several exposures. The image I liked best were when the milky way was cradled by a gap in the rocks.

- [Cheddar Gorge Light Trails and Milky Way](https://allist.one/product/cheddar-gorge-light-trails-and-milky-way/) - "Stars above Racers Below" Whenever I'm at Cheddar Gorge at night, I am transported thinking of our our ancestors and geological time. Then a car blazes past in the gorge below and the spell is broken. I would be annoyed, but what a spot to have a drag race 😂
- [Red Deer in Richmond Park](https://allist.one/product/red-deer-in-richmond-park/) - "The King and the Dark" I never thought I would take a predawn wildlife shot that was a keeper. In fact, I was happy enough with this shot that it made it framed onto my wall and into my portfolio. I was following this guy for a while. It was grey and overcast and I was shooting through the foliage to try and bring in some colour and warmth. When he stepped into a pool of light, I grabbed this frame. I was shooting on a 30-year-old, manual focus 300mm 2.8 and the stag held just still enough that I could get a sharp image at 1/30 sec and ISO 3200. Thank goodness for IBIS and high ISO performance (and the bit of luck that I needed to nail focus.) Wildlife photography is not my mainstay, but getting a good wildlife shot is one of the most gratifying experiences I've had in photography. This picture was was taken near the Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park.
- [Cheddar Lone Tree](https://allist.one/product/cheddar-lone-tree/) - "Cheddar Tree" I have spent so much time standing on the edges of the cliffs at Cheddar that sometimes I forget that there is beauty down in the gorge too. I had this shot in mind for a while and when autumn came around, I had a short window to get it before the trees lost their leaves. Commuting as I do between Bristol and Taunton, I took a detour on a day that looked promising and I was rewarded.
- [Cheddar Gorge Astrophotography](https://allist.one/product/pathway-to-the-stars/) - "Road to the Stars" There are certain locations that deserve to be visited over and over again. This S bend at Cheddar Gorge is one of them for me. I have revisited this location and shot it in all sorts of conditions. This astrophotography version is one of my favorites. I have shot the Milky Way at Cheddar before, but I much prefer this version which is a little more anonymous. What I like most about this version of this composition is how dark it allows the cliffs to be. The shadows fall into deep darks and only the outcrops catch some of the fading light of sunset.
- [Cheddar Stormy Sunset](https://allist.one/product/cheddar-storm/) - This is a classic Somerset shot for every landscape photography who comes to Cheddar, but I find it worth revisiting in all seasons and weather conditions!
- [Ayrmer Cover Moon](https://allist.one/product/aymer-cover-moon/) - "By the Light of the Moon" I used to like the moon to be larger in the frame when I included it in photos. That is less the case these days, and I find the moon at 24mm to be a pleasing element in certain compositions. I particularly like the minutes during blue hour where the ambient light balances with the luminance of the moon, and it looks like the scene is lit by the moon's silvery light. I'm glad I came away from this morning with an image. I had never explored Ayrmer Cove before and I didn't know the tide times. When I arrived, it was a high spring tide, and this iconic learning slab of rock seemed slightly small in the frame. With a bit of tweaking of perspective on the beach and some work in Photoshop, I came away with a pleasing enough image.
- [Fairy Pools, Skye](https://allist.one/product/fairy-pools-on-skye/) - "Turquoise and Russet" My first trip to Scotland and island hopping on the Hebrides did not disappoint. The weather was awful. Sheets of rain for most of the trip. But between the storms there were moments of such beauty. For Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye, I wanted mood and I got it in buckets. Hiking in, I was being pelted with rain and around sunrise, it cleared enough that I could get a few shots. The autumn colours contrast the turquoise water nicely and this is what I focused on in the editing room.
- [Haytor, Dartmoor](https://allist.one/product/haytor-dartmoor/) - "Dolphin and Eagle Above Haytor" This was taken in late May—the last Milky Way window of the spring. At our latitude, for June and most of July we remain in Astronomical Twilight, where the sun never descends far enough below the horizon and the skies never become truly dark. I had planned to shoot the Milky Way Core, but after arriving early and spending a few evening hours exploring, I didn't find any compositions that would work well with the Milky Way Core. Instead, I found this alignment. I don't know enough about astronomy, but the constellations I picked out on the night were Delphinus and Aquila. I like this use of the Milky Way as a compositional device. It aligns much more with how I shoot nowadays; as I plan future astro trips, my I think my focus will be using the line of the Milky Way as a graphical element to complement a well-thought-out composition rather than the sine qua non of my adventure.
- [Castle Stalker, Scotland](https://allist.one/product/castle-stalker-scotland/) - "Salt and Stone" As often happens with new locations, I arrived before sunrise, without a clear composition in mind. My imagination was taken by the shapes of the tidal pools of water in the salt marsh and I spent a good hour working on this frame. When I posted this image on social media, people thought the focus was too much on the landscape and said that Castle Stalker wasn't a proper subject. However, that is what struck me when I arrived here; so many images of this place make the castle on the island seem very prominent, but it was the landscape that took my imagination more than the keep. Working on salt marshes is always tricky—the landscape changes so quickly with the tide; in the end, I found it very difficult to get the foreground interest quite how I wanted it. Needless to say, this spot is high on my list to revisit when I am next in Glencoe.
- [Church Rock, Pembrokeshire](https://allist.one/product/church-rock-pembrokeshire/) - "Mind the Gap" In spring 2022, I visited Pembrokeshire for the first time. Of all the sites to photograph—the Green Bridge of Wales, Church Doors and St Govan's Chapen—Church Rock stood out in my research. These sea stacks did not disappoint. While there were a lot of compositions from the beach that I wanted to explore, looking on the Ordnance Survey map the day before, this sinkhole on saddle point had caught my imagination. I had planned to make this shot even more minimalist and I hoped to compose out the headland to focus on just the stacks and the lagoon, but I just couldn't find the angle to do so; in the end, though, I was happy enough with it as the distant headland loses contrast from the moisture in the air. I can see myself visiting Pembrokeshire again before too long and when I do, Broadhaven is top of my list to revisit.
- [Glyder Fawr, Snowdonia](https://allist.one/product/glyder-fawr-snowdonia/) - "Beyond Snowdon" For a while, I have wanted to combine my photography with hiking. I want to build my fitness to explore familiar areas and get unique shots. This shot was from the first such trip of 2022. In February, while there was still snow on the peaks, I hiked the Glyderau range starting in Ogwen. I had intended this circular walk to get me back to the car by lunchtime and I set off before sunrise, but once I got to the peak here at Glyder Fawr, I realised that I had to stick around for good light. The winds were strong and bitingly cold, but I found shelter and waited on this composition for 4 hours until sunset. I think the results are worth it. Climbing down an unfamiliar scramble at night wasn't my favourite way to end the day, but dinner back at camp that night never tasted so good!
- [Misty Dawn at Clifton Suspension Bridge](https://allist.one/product/misty-dawn-at-clifton-suspension-bridge/) - "That Bridge" I've been to this location several times, waiting for the right conditions. Finally, everything came together. This might have been a couple of weeks past peak autumn colours, but I couldn't have asked for much more from the atmospherics.
- [Godrevy Lighthouse, Cornwall](https://allist.one/product/godrevy-lighthouse-cornwall/) - Is there anything more peaceful than a sunrise on a beach? Cornwall is a happy place for me. Childhood memories of holidaying there sometimes several times a summer. If it wasn’t so cut off from the rest of the UK, I would move down there and be a full-time beachcomber. Luckily for me, one of my closest friends has just moved to Hayle, so I will be seeing more of St Ives Bay and Gwithian, where I took this frame.
- [Sand Tracks on Lewis](https://allist.one/product/sand-tracks-on-lewis/) - "Stormy Sandtracks" My trip to Lewis and Harris was very successful for a first visit. I took images I am pleased with. But first encounters with a new landscape are like a brief introduction at a networking event—you land briefly on a few topics of interest and then move on. When I return to Lewis and Harris, these sand tracks will be a big focus for me. I took this image 10 minutes after first seeing these circles drawn in the sand by the wind in the grass. I spent another 30 minutes trying to frame a composition later the same day on Luskentyre, but those frames aren't the same as these dark stormy clouds and the soft morning light catching the sand in the air and giving the scene an ethereal glow.
- [Otter Island, Derwent Water](https://allist.one/product/otter-island-derwent-water/) - "Getting Low" I am not sure how I feel about this image. In some ways, I like it—it has the graphical nature I like, but I really wanted my tripod to go down another 10 centimetres. I feel like this composition could just be a little more refined. The rocks in the bottom left of the image could do with being just a little closer to the subject trees on the Island. Don't get me wrong, I am still happy with it, but when I return to the Lake District, I want to head to Derwent Water and revisit this spot!
- [Wellington Monument Barley](https://allist.one/product/wellington-monument-barley/) - "Late Summer" It is hard to get a compelling shot of Wellington Monument. My favourite shots of it are detailed shots that include the iconography above the entrance. I always think that the monument looks best as part of it's environment. I overlooked this image. It was just a handheld snapshot testing out a new lens. But when I was going through and culling my images from 2021, this one stood out to me as having potential. The image does what it needs to to set this imposing needle in its environment. Agriculture and fluffy white clouds - almost a caricature of rural Britain.
- [Quantock Woodland](https://allist.one/product/dead-womans-ditch/) - "Fanal in Somerset" When travel first opened up after the pandemic, I was jealous of photographers I knew jetting off to Madeira. One of the highlights seemed to be Fanal forest where gnarled and twisted trees loomed out of the mist or reached towards a starry sky. It's only recently that I have discovered our own Fanal closer to home. I've explored Dead Woman's ditch on the Quantocks a number of times, but I hadn't seen this copse before. Unfortunately, the light pollution from Bridgwater and Hinkley Point means this won't be a good astrophotgraphy spot, but it works well in the fog.
- [Flooded Somerset Orchard](https://allist.one/product/flooded-somerset-orchard/) - "Flooded in Blossom" I drive past this orchard all the time on my way to work. Every time there is prolonged rain, the road next to the orchard gets flooded and out of the corner of my eye, I catch the reflections on the water underneath the apple trees. I have been waiting for flooding to coincide with a misty morning, but I have yet to get lucky. Last May we had unseasonable, prolonged rain while the apples were in blossom and I took the opportunity. While a little mist to add atmosphere would have made this photo even better, I count myself lucky to have caught a scene like this in Somerset.
- [Stockhill Wood](https://allist.one/product/stockhill-wood/) - "Find a Path" Woodland photography usually scares me. But foggy conditions do make it easier. Still, while I was looking for a shot in this popular bit of woodland between Bristol and Wells, I felt overwhelmed. Then I came on this scene on the edge of a clearing and the composition was immediately obvious. The pathway through gives the eye somewhere to follow through the woodland chaos and the bare deciduous tree in the clearing in the centre left adds some interest to contrast the repeating patterns of the pine trees.
- [Dunster by Moonlight](https://allist.one/product/dunster-b-moonlight/) - "Dunster by Moonlight" Dunster castle is a magical location to visit. I always find the castle difficult to photography though. I'm starting to find my favourite angles, but the atmospherics have never quite been what I have in mind. I have wanted to get a milky way image of Dunster for years now. Unfortunately, when I last went there, the moon was full, and the chances of getting any detail out of the dusty clouds of the milky way were slim. Instead, this is a composite shot. The moonlit castle with its reflection in a flooded field is here backed by a sky that was taken on Exmoor a few days earlier.

- [St Michael's Mount, Cornwall](https://allist.one/product/guardians/) - "Guardians" Do you spot the dragons? Luckily for this lone photographer - standing up to his boot brims in brine - the dragons due to star in the forthcoming Game of Thrones prequel were still in makeup. The production marquees were more conspicuous, though. This might be my favourite type of light to shoot in - blue hour with some pre-sunrise, directional light. I used a polariser to take some of the reflections off the water and reveal the causeway. There were just a few moments when the full length of the path could be seen through the water before it vanished beneath the water. If you look closely, there is also a security guard standing on the island at the end of the path. One of his colleagues came shortly afterwards and politely asked me to leave. I guess the don't want any spoilers (although I very much doubt anyone was filming at 5am... All images are printed to a high specification. Anything smaller than A3 (in this case 10x12" and smaller) is rendered on Fotospeed Cotton Paper for anything bigger than A3, I use Hahnemühle FineArt German Etching Paper.
- [Tavy Cleave Stars](https://allist.one/product/tavy-cleave-stars/) - "Rock Patterns at Tavy Cleave" I had planned to hike into Dartmoor and camp for the night, but when I arrived, a bitter easterly wind had picked up and I decided to have a short hike, shoot sunset and drive home. I played with this composition at Tavy Cleave for a couple of hours - working out how to compose the different elements in the frame so that they were balanced and would lead the eye through the composition. When the sunset colours ended up in the wrong place for me, I stayed until the stars appeared.

After almost a year, enough distance is between me and that painful event for me to edit the image to the level it deserves. If anyone spots an leather Altberg boot on Porlock Marshes, I will reward them with a free print.

- [Sunrise Reflections at St Mary Redcliffe](https://allist.one/product/porlock-marshes-astrophotography-copy/) - "Reflection" One of those mornings that just keeps giving. I have about 5 frames that I could have edited from this morning down at Bristol harbor. More and more I have a backlog of editing and I have started to think of shoots as putting images in the bank for later. At some point I will revisit this some of these shots. There are some which give St Mary Redcliffe more prominence.
- [Elgol Rain](https://allist.one/product/elgol-rain/) - "Between the Squalls" I spent a substantial chunk of my time at Elgol under an umbrella. I shot a few compositions, but this was by far my favourite. As is often the case, I had packed up and was walking away when I spotted this composition. I quickly set up and caught a 4 minute exposure of the last light of the day shining through a sheet of rain on the bay. The edit for this shot was easy. The only arduous task was cloning out hot pixels!
- [Misty Taunton Sunrise](https://allist.one/product/633/) - "Autumn Sun" On the edge of the Somerset Levels, during September and October Taunton often wakes up bathing Autumn mist. Looking towards the east, if the conditions are right, the fog catches fire. This was just one of those mornings. This image won the Telegraph's Big Picture Photography competition.
- [Morocco's Blue City](https://allist.one/product/moroccos-blue-city/) - "Blue City" Before I focused on landscape photography, I would have called myself a travel photographer. This is the last trip I took before the lockdowns which made up much of 2020 and 2021. I'm looking forward to starting to travel again. If I went back to Chefchaouen, it wouldn't be in the winter though. The stone house are without good heating 🧊
- [Burnham-on-Sea Low Lighthouse](https://allist.one/product/burnham-on-sea-low-lighthouse/) - "The Lighthouse" This was the image when I realised that landscape photography was my medium. For a long time I had been dabbling in wildlife and street too. But there was something about the interpretation that I was able to give the Low Lighthouse at Burnham, using a filter to blur out the water that gave me insight into the creative depths of landscape photography. Plus there was the chase - this was the first time I really felt the thrill of waiting to see if the colours of sunset would go off!
- [Lyme Regis Fossil](https://allist.one/product/lyme-regis-fossil/) - "Ripples in Time" We spent large parts of the summer at Charmouth and the Dorset coast hunting for fossils and playing in the sand and Lyme Regis is one of my favourite places. This image is one of my first attempts at long exposure. I have always meant to play more with this concept, but I have never got round to it.
- [Angersleigh Church Milky Way](https://allist.one/product/angersleigh-church-milky-way/) - "Creation" I shot this image three times. Once when I was just getting started with astophotography and didn't know what I was doing. The image came out grainy with a purple hue. A year later I revisited the site and got a version I was happier with. I sent this image to the church email address as I thought they would like a copy. They clearly liked the gesture because the church warden was kind enough to come and turn the lights on the following month. I plan to do a series like this.
- [Sergiev Posad, Moscow](https://allist.one/product/blessed-are-the-meek/) - "Blessed are the Meek" This was taken during at Easter in the cathedral at Sergiev Posad, on Moscow's golden ring. Luckily, when I took this image, I was new to photography. If I had have been a little further in my learning, I would have worried about settings and fluffed my lines.

- [Exmoor Stream and the Milky Way](https://allist.one/product/exmoor-stream-to-the-milky-way/) - "River to the Stars" Early in the Milky Way season means a very early (or late) start. The Milky Way was going to be in prime position at about 0430, but this location is an hour's hike from the car park on Exmoor. I arrived at midnight, hoping to get some good foreground shots before the the galactic core rose above the horizon. The night was clear and frost formed on my walking boots as I stood beside the little stream leading towards this clump of trees. Luckily I had hand warmers and a flask, so had an enjoyable few hours shooting the foreground and waiting for the earth to rotate into the best spot for my composition. Clouds started rolling in at about 4 and my hopes of a clear sky began to fade, but in the end, the pattern that the clouds formed - framing the path of the Milky Way - works really well for the image.

- [A Snow Moon Over Bristol](https://allist.one/product/misty-dawn-at-clifton-suspension-bridge-copy/) - "Snow Moon" Months of planning came together on a beautiful morning in late February. This shot of the snow moon is taken from Perrett Park in South Bristol. What I like about it are the details - Bristol's famous rows of colourful houses, Clifton Suspension Bridge, even the masts of the SS Great Britain. The blue band you can see in the sky - sandwiching the moon to the horizon - is the shadow of the earth a few minutes before the sun rises.
- [Kazebegi, Georgia](https://allist.one/product/kazebegi-georgia/) - "Mountain Pass at Kazbegi" I have only been once, but Georgia remains a place very close to my heart. The people are friendly, the wine is good and the mountains are almost indescribable. When our guide first pointed out the range of mountains which separate Georgia from Russia, I thought he was pointing out interestingly shaped clouds. Through the haze, these mountains tower above you. They become no less impressive when you are among them. Now that landscape photography is my main focus, I would love to rent a 4x4 again and return to explore this area.
