My trip to Antarctica was focused on filming over photography—especially during this first visit to land. Wildlife photography is a real skill and takes practice, patience and a bit of good fortune to produce anything really special. Video is a little different. A moving picture allows you to cheat somewhat and convey the dynamism of the animals in this pristine environment without the need to be quite so thoughtful and precise with composition. At first I thought that the still photos I took on Cuverville Island were nothing special. Although the light at this latitude is slightly diffuse, there was still a lot of contrast and as someone who likes shooting at late blue hour, I felt a like a fish out of water. I was just pleased to be there, but now almost a year on, I have started revisiting these compositions and I have realised that there are quite a few frames that I overlooked in the immediate aftermath of the trip. This is one of those.
