My mothers sider of the family meet in Southwold every summer. We have been doing so since the 60s. Luckily my cousins are a similar age to me, so the tradition was never a chore and we still see each other there in June or July before the schools break up. When I first got into landscape photography, visiting Southwold was exhausting. At that time, I still thought that getting a good photograph meant catching sunrise colour—and sunrise during the solstice on the east coast is unreasonably early. Still, I caught a few good images using this approach. This one from Covehithe is not the sort of photo that I would usually, intimate landscapes not being my forte. Yet given the time of year we visit, conditions that would allow me to take a shot of the wider landscape and include more of the petrified trees on the beach, has not been forthcoming. Hopefully one day, a high tide will coincide with moody fog during our week on the Suffolk coast.
