Taking things slow on my journeys to Scotland always seems like a good idea. And in my head, a paddle on a kayak seemed like a good way to break up the drive. But after the 400-odd miles of motorway driving from Bristol to Loch Lomond, I found it difficult to adjust—slowing from driving speed to rhythmic paddling pace was jarring and my mind was racing. When I look at this image, I can’t help associating it with the farcical kayak ride back to the car from making it. Long story short, I spent sunset that evening trying to retrieve my drone from the bottom of the lock. The kayak trip was like one of those Instagram vs reality memes. I’d imagined drone shots with me clean paddling into the sunset, but what I got was headwinds, slow progress and a mistake that might have meant no drone footage for the rest of the trip… I like this image, but there is so much more potential to get from the scene. 5 more centimetres of water, autumn leaves and a hard frost would take this from pleasing to spectacular.
