Sunset at the Underfall Yard, Bristol

“Bristol Red”

A poignant image for me given the recent vandalism of the Underfall Yard. I lived on Bristol Harbour for a year and I enjoyed this iconic landmark most days on a run or an evening stroll. Whenever I take shots this saturated, I’m never sure what to do with them. I was tempted to tone down the colours; you probably needed to witness this mid-March sunset to believe I haven’t overbaked it! Everyone passing stopped to get out their phones and filmed or snapped images. There had been a small boat positioned on the inside of the pontoon the previous evening and I was disappointed to find it gone, but on reflection, it was for the best; something complex in the foreground might have been distracting; and besides, I like that the “Bristol Blue” boat provides a linguistic and tonal contrast to the overwhelming red of the sunset.
