It was the end of my autumn 2024 trip, and I tore myself away from Skye unwillingly. The last week had been a blur, but I was confident in at least five of the photos. Job done for now. I second guessed my decision to drive south when the aurora alerts started. However I had someone to meet in Edinburgh the following day and I didn’t want fancy travelling too far in the morning. So I drove. I didn’t stop in Glencoe and sped through the crowds as quickly as I could. I planned to break the journey to Edinburgh at Loch Lomond. A superstitious part of me felt that the gods of that water may look favourably on my after I sacrificed a drone battery to them on a fateful kayaking journey on the way up. Just as I predicted before I called it a night, as I was falling asleep, the aurora red alerts started pinging. I may well have missed the best of the display, but I am more than happy with the images I did get from my evening under the stars. I like the graphical elements of the stream outlet reflecting the purple of the pillars and as I had hoped, the rock out into the water anchors the composition nicely. The purple pillars in the upper atmosphere push your eyes back into the scene towards the dominant lime green of the ionised nitrogen and atomic oxygen. While I cursed the cars as they passed me, one of my favourite elements of this photo is a headlights of a car as it rounded a bend further up the edge of the loch.
